Using Motion Design to Elevate Your Visuals
October 24, 2024
Motion design is a visually impressive discipline that bears some similarities to other animation styles, and has its distinct purpose and unique visual qualities. At Igloo Creative House, as part of Magic Media, we offer high-quality motion design services to help elevate the visual experience of our client work.
With the experience we’ve cultivated working on various motion design projects, we’ve developed a deep understanding of how they’re best used and, importantly, when to use this visual style to make our client’s videos all the more engrossing for the viewer.
What is Motion Design?
Motion design is similar to animation in that it is a process of creating movement in 2D or 3D spaces. As opposed to animation that’s seen in product videos, brand videos, or even game trailers, motion design tends to focus completely on the visual wow factor as opposed to the narrative elements commonly imbued in more traditional animations and video productions. With motion design, viewers can expect to see well-edited cleverly framed productions with a strong emphasis on transitions, zooms, and more designed to be visually impressive above all.
2D and 3D Motion Design
Motion design is a perfectly viable route to take for creative video productions in both 2D and 3D. From our experience, 3D motion design tends to provide more creative options as compared with 2D. With 3D motion design, the extra depth provides more opportunities for using interesting camera angles and lighting setups, allowing for more overall depth to explore.
Motion design is widely applicable to different kinds of video content such as product videos, website graphics, e-commerce content, user interfaces, and much more. Deciding between 2D and 3D motion design approaches is usually a creative decision that depends on what would suit the video content more. Ultimately, 2D and 3D motion design are different approaches that bear some similarities. Deciding which direction to go should be taken with careful consideration for overall artistic direction, client requirements, and budget.
Crafting Motion Design Video Content
The process of crafting motion design content begins with a somewhat familiar pre-production phase that’s akin to the usual process we follow for crafting other kinds of animation. As with the majority of other projects, we kick off our motion design projects by crafting a script, creating a storyboard to flesh out the various sequences required for the piece, and animatics to gain an understanding of how the scenes will flow together. During this early period, we work in 2D for a large portion of our preparatory work. We create rough sketches of the motion design to begin with, and we craft some styles frames in 2D using Photoshop.
As far as tools and software for motion design work go, we primarily use the 3D software suite Cinema 4D. Though this is our primary software for work of this nature, any other 3D software can be used. We’ve used Blender in the past on some motion design projects and are capable of adapting to use other software as required.
Motion Design Projects at Igloo Creative House
In the past, we’ve lent our motion design services to brands like Keter. For Keter, we crafted a 3D motion design video to showcase their newest planters. With our motion design, we highlighted in detail how they can be assembled and disassembled with ease, one of the planter’s key features. Our client was more than satisfied with its final result and visual quality and even showed our motion design video at a notable exhibition where it received an overwhelmingly positive response.
Even our very own Igloo Creative House logo was created as a 3D motion design piece, further proving its versatility and potential for all manner of applications.
